The designer and the publisher did a great job of creating a new supehero RPG with a distinctly different feel from the other popular RPGs in the niche that are on the market now. Nice history of the genre. Believe it or not, I still have my copy of Superhero , too, and my original Villains and Vigilantes boxed set.
It seems to me that 3 games about his obsession with apes and monkeys might be a little too much. Skip to content Roleplaying games are games where the players take the roles of fictional characters in a story. Superhero Roleplaying Game Systems The game system is the set of rules that governs the action in a superhero roleplaying game. Superhero Roleplaying Games Overview Superhero The first superhero roleplaying game was called Superhero and was published by Gamescience in Champions Champions Hero Games published Champions in , and for years, it was the most popular superhero roleplaying game in existence.
Icons Steve Kenson and Adamant Entertainment surprised everyone in the industry a couple of years ago when they announced that Kenson was designing a new superhero RPG.
This system also has a mechanic that Sean had never seen before. In My Superhero Life! That dice pool gets built up over time, adding different dice sizes to the pool based on the threats present in each encounter. The last superhero RPG we are going to talk about is the one that Sean thought the most unique, Spectaculars.
This supers RPG is dice and card driven and features a number of board game-like elements. This game almost feels like a deck builder with all of the stuff that comes in the box.
In addition to this, Spectaculars also features a number of tear-off pads, similar to score pads from various other games. One set of these is used by each player as their character sheet and a pad is also used for each published scenarios, which they refer to as a series.
Now another board game-like aspect of this system is that every time you sit down, you can swap players, characters, and even the narrator role. The reason you can swap who is running the game is that there is no hidden information, all of the players are working to create stories together. In addition to the rule book, Spectaculars comes with a setting book.
This is used before and during play to help you build the world as a group. The scenario book is really a series of questions for the group to answer and prompts for scenes to play out. Interestingly, different groups of heroes can play through the same series with each team, impacting the other teams through collaborative world building.
In essence, each box of Spectaculars is a shared universe of stories, like the Marvel, or DC Universe. One of the highlights for Sean was the character creation system.
As already mentioned, your main character sheet comes from a tear off pad, which tracks things like your name, advancements and some narrative aspects of the character. The rest of your character is built through the use of cards, randomly drawn and organized in a tableau in front of you. Tell me all about it in the comments below! Narrative systems often encounter a lot of problems, as they generally require a lot of on the spot rulings and can easily lead to disagreements because they leave so much vague.
As an acting coach, I also find the statement that narrative games encourage roleplaying more than crunchy games completely false. Whether you focus on the rolE playing aspect or not depends entirely on the way the GM handles the storytelling and on how everyone plays their characters.
And why not also mention Better Angels, Icons, etc.? It was not our intention to criticize crunchier games or to put narrative games on a pedestal in this article. This is a list of games Sean read recently. Personally, I prefer crunchier games. I suspect Guardians of Order decided to go with d20 for Silver Age Sentinels because at the time, d20 was the biggest part of the market. Your email address will not be published. In , Superhero was the only superhero game on the market. While the superhero role playing game market has never come close to matching the size of the fantasy RPG market, it has been a robust market that has seen quite almost different games. Though if you disagree with me, you are clearly wrong and your favorite game was ignored because it was found wanting which is why I crucified it upon the Tree of Woe.
Do you see it? Shane Hensley and crew did exactly the opposite. Needless to say, I was impressed with the game and its line of fantasy, pirate and monster-hunting products. Shane and crew quickly proved me wrong.

Instead I spent my days coming up with ingenious new plot twists to frustrate and delight my players, and rolling up still more villains to bedevil them. That obsession eventually led to the publication of the Wild Cards series of shared world super hero novels, for which many fans are grateful. Superworld started its gaming life as a small booklet in a multi-genre product called Worlds of Wonder published by Chaosium.
It is a good system, but it is greatly improved with the addition of the Superworld Companion. The Companion has contributions by a number of authors including Wayne Shaw. Remember that name: it will be coming up again.
